TRANSPORTATION IN SEVILLE

Buses

Seville has an extensive and efficient system of public transportation. Most students make use of the local bus service during their stay in Seville. The cost of transportation should be calculated into one’s overall expenses for the semester. The cost of one bus trip is €1.10 (approximately $2), to be paid directly to the driver. For those students who choose to use the bus often, it is more economical to buy the 10-ticket pass, or "bonobus", which costs €5 and has no expiration date.  This ticket allows for unlimited transfers on different lines, within one hour’s time. The “bonobus” can be purchased in tobacco shops. The monthly bus pass, which costs €28, offers unlimited use of all the lines within the bus service and is valid for a 30-day period after the first time it is used.

Buses 1, 30, 31, 33, and 36 leave students within one block of the ICS. Most buses run from 6:00 a.m to 11:15 p.m. While there are special late night buses (líneas nocturnas) which leave from the Puerta de Jerez at 12:00 a.m., 1:00 a.m., and 2:00 a.m. the ICS recommends that all students make use of the taxi service when returning home this late at night.

Bicycles

Seville’s bicycle program (called Sevici) covers the small and medium daily routes within the city. There are some 250 stations and 2500 bicycles available. The city has been newly equipped with bicycle paths and to use it one must acquire a yearly or weekly membership. The yearly membership costs €10 and the weekly is €5. When a membership is purchased the user is provided with a member code to be used at the stations. The weekly pass can be obtained directly at any station by presenting a credit card. In both cases €150 euros is authorised as safety deposit and returned at the end of the hire period.

Bicycles can be borrowed from, and returned to, any station in the system. Each station has between 10 and 40 parking slots to fix and lock the bicycle. To borrow a bicycle simply follow the booth instructions. To return a bicycle one simply places the bike in a spare slot at any station, the bike is recognised automatically and is locked into place.

Taxi Service

In Seville it is very easy to find a taxi virtually anywhere and at nearly any hour. A lit green light on the hood of the car is the signal that it is available. All taxis must run official rates, which are clearly posted on one of the two back-seat windows.  While the rate vary according to the hour of the day, it is an official flat rate of €19.04 to drive to or from the Seville airport.  Disgruntled passengers, or those that believe to be overcharged, have the right to demand a receipt with the driver’s identification number indicated on it in order to make a claim. This number is written in white on the right-hand side of the dashboard. 

TRANSPORTATION FROM SEVILLE

Most of Spain is well covered by both bus and train networks and for journeys between major towns there is often little to choose between them in cost or speed.  On shorter or less obvious routes buses tend to be quicker and normally will also take you closer to the downtown area.

Buses

Seville has two bus stations from which leave numerous buses to local towns and villages as well as to distant cities, provinces and countries.  The bus service from Seville is extense and the buses are generally reliable and comfortable.  The two bus stations are the Plaza de Armas station (phone number: 95-490-7737) and the Prado de San Sebastian station (phone number: 95-441-7111). To which bus station you need to go depends on your travel destination.  Students should consult with the ICS Student Affairs office for information regarding travel destinations, bus schedules and from which station exact buses depart.

Trains

All trains leaving Seville, from the local trains to nearby towns to the high-speed bullet train (AVE) to Madrid, depart from the Santa Justa railway station. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the station from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Airport Transportation

The Seville San Pablo airport in Seville is located six miles north of the city center. There is an Airport Shuttle which leaves from downtown Seville. The first stop on route is the street Palos de la Frontera, across from the University of Seville. The first daily departure is at 5:15 a.m. and successive buses leave at half hour intervals until 11:45 p.m. On weekends there are less departure times. Taxi service between the Seville airport and any point in Seville proper is an official flat rate of €19.40.
