Flamenco is a synthesis of music and dance which has become to be identified with the essence of Spain. Its expression can be divided into three forms: Cante "The song", Baile " The dance" and Guitarra " Guitar playing".
Much contemporary Flamenco shows influence of other kinds of music, such as jazz, salsa, bossa nova, etc. In the past few years mass media has brought Flamenco onto the world stage, but for true aficionados of the genre Flamenco always has been and always will be the most intimate of artistic expression.
Seville, as the historic heartland of Flamenco, has much to offer in its entertainment and promotion. Every two years, during the months of September and October, Seville hosts the most important and famous Flamenco festival in the world: LA BIENAL DE FLAMENCO. At the Teatro Lope de Vega one has the unique opportunity to see first-class performances by the most renowned Flamenco artists of the day. Numerous concerts, performances, theatrical productions and quite a wide variety of events are organized for the public.
FLAMENCO VIENE DEL SUR is another popular festival which takes place in Seville. Once a year contemporary Flamenco is promoted in a number of concerts and performances, offered at the Teatro Central. At this festival one can hear the fascinating new fusions of Flamenco with Jazz and "World Music."
Perhaps the most widespread manifestation of Flamenco, Sevillanas dancing is also one of the most accessible expressions. During their semester in Seville, most American students enroll in a dance course at a local academy to learn this colorful and sensual dance in which great importance is placed on delicate hand movements and prolonged eye contact. Students find that learning to dance Sevillanas is not only a fascinating cultural experience, but that it also has a most practical use. During the April Fair, when Sevillanas dancing never seems to stop, they can participate in the fun as much as the locals.
